How do you know when God is telling you to do something?

It is a question that I am sure many Christians have asked themselves. “How do I know that this is what God wants me to do, and not just me telling myself that it is?”

It’s a real head scratching dilemma, isn’t it? So many times, I have had opportunities come up where I am just completely flabbergasted and unsure that what is before me is God’s will or mine.

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him”

The simple answer is Prayer. Ask God to help and give you advice, and he shall give it. This is where atheists love to chime in.

“How do you know that it is God answering and not just your own little voice, telling you what you think you want to hear?”

It’s one heck of an argument that can be made against Christianity. A common flaw in many Christians today, is that they expect to ACTUALLY hear God speak. This isn’t how he talks to us and to think that it is, is naive at best. In my opinion, God speaks through circumstance. He acts through events.

I am a professional blogger by trade. I pay my bills by writing articles for other people. I had recently lost a major writing contract and was facing some very serious financial hardships and severe stress upon my family and myself. Desperate, I prayed. I prayed like there was no other option in my life, because there really weren’t too many options available.

As it would turn out, God provided. He used the circumstances of the loss of the contract to open another door and afford me the opportunity to be writing for you today. He had used those events, those situations to forever change the course of my life. That is how God answers prayer. That is how God talks to us. Through the actual living of life, and us putting our faith and trust in him.

Many people would say that this is not a good enough answer, and that they want a more tangible form of proof. Proof that God is commanding us and guiding us. I have the answer to that too.

It’s called the Bible.

God has given us an instruction manual. A guide to how we are supposed to live and love and coexist with each other.

The primary way God commands us is through His Word.

2 Timothy 3:16

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”

If Scripture commands something of us, there’s no need to hesitate and wonder if it’s really God’s will for us. God has already provided us with the answers we need. We need only open the Word and study it. To me personally, the Bible is just as crucial to living as water, food and air. You must feed your body, but you also need to feed your soul. It is terrifying and disheartening to many, but just as living takes effort; so does living with God and walking a righteous path.

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths”.

I am sure there are some reading this right now that are feeling a little let down as to the answers I have provided. That would be the enemy my friends. The “need for instant gratification” is one of the Devils greatest weapons against civilization today. Don’t give in to it. Being righteous is a hard, long and lengthy process. With twists and turns, perils and hardships; the road is long but in the end, will all be worth it.

You have the instruction manual. When in doubt, open the Bible and figure out how to fix the problem. God will speak to you through the word and the events yet to come.
